The Vine Community Centre - A Volunteer's Story

When the Vine Community Centre was opened in 1990 I was living and working in Lenton. Ever since, I have had an interest in its role within Hyson Green, and have visited it for meetings on a number of occasions.

After my retirement to Southwell in 2000 our church, Holy Trinity, established a link with St.Stephen’s and the ‘Rainbow Project’ which aims to help refugees and asylum seekers. A few years ago our congregation came to Nottingham on a Sunday morning to share in the church’s worship. Last year, knowing that ‘The Vine’ was looking for more volunteers I said I would be willing to be a receptionist.

In August 2009, I began to come to the Centre each Friday morning. My main job is to welcome visitors, to answer the phone and, where I can, to answer questions or at least direct people to someone who can! It took a little while to pick up all the procedures, but I always had to hand the advice of the Volunteer Coordinator and the Front-of-House Manager who acted as my mentors.

A year later, I feel more confident in the work expected of me. I have made new friends among both the employed staff and other volunteers. I now look forward to coming on Fridays because I shall usually meet somebody with an interesting story to tell. There is always something useful to learn or to do, even if it is only sharing a cup of coffee with my colleagues.

I know that ‘The Vine’ depends on its volunteers, as well as its paid staff, to remain open and available seven days a week. It is good to be one of those who make it possible.
